As a new director for the St. Johns River to Sea Loop Alliance, one of my first tasks was representing our organization at the recent Florida Greenways and Trails Foundation (FGTF) meeting in Sanford. It was a fantastic chance to share updates about the Loop and the Alliance, and an incredible introduction to the passionate people and critical issues shaping greenways and trails across Central Florida and beyond.
Key Takeaways and Connections
Former FGTF board president, Dale Allen, shared fascinating news about the proposed Lake to Lake multi-use trail. This ambitious project will create a continuous 150-mile recreational corridor across Central Florida, linking the Coast-to-Coast Trail at Lake Monroe (Fort Mellon Park) to the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail.
The meeting fostered a truly friendly atmosphere, and I had a stellar opportunity to connect with many important participants. I gained an enlightening perspective on equestrian interests from Debra Tyrone (retired FDOT). I also met DeLand resident Gary Huttman, Executive Director of Metroplan Orlando. Doug Alderson, formerly with the Office of Greenways and Trails and well-known for designing the Florida Trail Towns program, captivated us with stunning photographs from his canoeing and kayaking adventures, now focusing his advocacy on waterway trail systems.
Sharing Our Progress
During my ten-minute presentation, I provided an overview of the Alliance’s work, including updates on our commemorative benches, progress on DeLand’s Black Heritage Trail, the designated bikeway from DeLand to SunRail, and our ongoing efforts to honor Trail Champions like Herb Hiller.
Volusia County Parks Director Tim Baylie also reported on various local projects, such as the DeLand Train Station kiosk and new prefab trailhead restrooms.
A Trail-Friendly Commute
Making the most of the experience, I decided to bike and take SunRail to the meeting. To my pleasant surprise, as I headed down W. 1st Street toward downtown Sanford, I was able to use the nearly finished bike lane all the way to French Avenue! The commute was smooth in both directions, and thankfully, rain-free.
A Shared Passion
I’m incredibly grateful for Alliance President Maggie Ardito’s invitation to participate in this meeting. It was a humbling experience to share our message with such a dedicated group of professionals and citizens. These like-minded individuals share a profound passion for preserving green spaces and wildlife, ensuring public access to these corridors, and helping communities realize the immense benefits that come with trail development and use. It’s truly inspiring!
